Controlling weeds in Carlsbad and Southeast New Mexico area generally an all season ongoing process. In our warmer climate where there are fewer extended freezes, even less cold hardy species can grow and be prolific throughout the entire Winter. And of course, as with most desert regions in the Southwest, the Spring, Summer, and Fall seasons promote countless species of broadleaf and grassy weeds and stickers in lawns, fields, orchards, gardens, roadsides, utility areas, oil pads, and almost any other area you can imagine including cracks in concrete and asphalt.

For the homeowner, usually the main concern is eliminating weeds that grow in lawns, gardens, access roads, vacant lots, and concrete areas with cracks. The majority of these residential applications is of course in front and backyard lawn turf areas where a beautiful unblemished grass area is desired.

Post And Pre-Emergent Weed Control In Lawns

A beautiful lush lawn is usually no accident and the result of hard work, planning, sufficient water, and a properly timed program of applying pre-emergent and post emergent herbicides. For some folks, a beautiful, lush, weed and sticker free lawn is a trophy and matching showcase for the rest of their landscaping. For others, it's a necessary element if they entertain, have a pool, or have kids that need a place to play.

While we'll leave the mowing and watering up to you, we are very knowledgeable in the area and will give free advice and consulting about it as part of our complete program. Along with that, we'll work out a complete season long pre and post herbicide program for you that will help keep your lawn and turf free of the unwanted troublesome weeds, grasses, and stickers of New Mexico. And you'll be surprised how inexpensive and cost effective it really is. Give us a call or send us a message today for a free consultation and estimate.

Generally, most people in Southeast New Mexico do at least a pre and post emergent application in the early Spring. This application kills the existing early Spring and late Winter weeds that are lingering in the lawn as well as prevents any seeds from sprouting into the Summer months. This application is especially important for yards with a problem with Field Sandbur and Puncture Vine as they can first germinate in the Spring.

For maximum control and a completely weed free lawn from season to season, we recommend at least two and possibly more applications a year. Once in the Spring and once in late Summer or early Fall is minimum. While three to four applications spaced months apart is absolute best, we apply very good coverage that generally works very well in most yards. Again, it depends on the type of invasive vegetation we're trying to control. As with Puncture Vine and Sandbur mentioned above,  three applications is generally necessary. The seeds from these plants can be viable for up to seven years.

Other plants that are Winter annuals such as Henbit require a Fall application. These weeds produce flowers and seed in the Spring and then die as the weather warms. However, the seeds lie dormant until the Winter and then germinate and infest lawns in the early Spring. With a Fall application of pre-emergent herbicide, these types of plants are suppressed.

Bare Ground Soil Sterilizing

This type of weed control is for any area where you don't want any type of vegetation to grow. For residential properties, this is usually but not limited to around buildings, fence lines, vacant lots, driveway pads, and other out of the way areas. Commercial applications are more but not limited to oilfield pads, right of ways, railroad, roadways, and utility areas around towers and power houses.

Bare ground soil sterilization is designed to keep the area clear and vegetation free. Depending on the amount of moisture we get in the area, these herbicides can be effective from a few to several months.

**What To Realistically Expect From Bare Ground Soil Sterilization** - While the herbicides we use are very effective and generally give good knockdown and control, many plant types are very resistant even to these types of chemicals. Bermuda grass is one and it grows very well in Carlsbad, New Mexico. It often requires a second application of a non-selective herbicide on some spots that may not die right away. While this isn't always the case, we always expect a 100% kill and don't include a second application in the initial cost. We don't want to charge you for services you won't get and of course we don't want the expense if we have to return for a small spot treatment.

Our Assessment

However, due to the nature of pre emergent herbicides and weed killers, we can't guarantee that you will be weed free for season long with just one application. Just being honest and up front here. Nobody can make that claim.
